How to Register a Domain Name with GoDaddy

If you did you’re research, you’re probably going about how to register your domain name for your Internet business right now. Don’t sweat it, my good friend, I got your back.

Why should it be YOU?

I know that some of you may not have the time to get your own domain name. So what you do is hire some web developer to do it all for you. See, here’s the thing: You can’t really tell how long a web developer can stay with you. By that, I meant there’s a slight chance he quits or go some place else.

If you asked him to register a domain name for you, he takes it with him wherever he goes. It would also be such a drag to transfer domain names and you might just end up purchasing a new one instead. This is why it’s important that YOU be the person to register your domain name for you.

In this article, I’ll talk about how you can correctly go about it – from GoDaddy, specifically.

In any case, you may be asking: “There are a lot of domain registries out there. Why should I settle for GoDaddy?”

Allow me to answer your question in three (or more) words:

It’s FAST – It literally takes a few minutes (my record’s set in 3 minutes tops) to get your own domain. It’s CHEAP – You’re getting a helluva lot of value for $9.99 (Consider the discount codes). It’s LOADED…with lots of other features – Email reminders for expiring domains, discounted bulk registrations and Back ordering services? Can’t go wrong with that.

Step 1: Claim your name

After doing some hefty keyword research and convincing your wallet to let go of that credit card (or after logging in to your Paypal account), do a search for your desired domain name and see if it’s available.

If it’s not, heck, try another OR replace the suffix (.com) with a .net or .org – whichever works.

Take note that there are discount codes and that you may want to use them to lessen your costs. You can literally search them off the Internet, try one and if it doesn’t work, try another. In any case, you can check out my other article where I’ll show you where to get these coupon codes and how to use them.

Step 2: Choose registration length and certification

Here’s a hefty note you might want to keep in mind. They say that Google puts in a little extra credit to those who register their domain names for more than a year. The reason behind such is because spammers would only register their domain for a year because they’re eventually going to have to take it anyway.

If you register for more than a year, you’re making the search engines go: “looks legit” because it shows that you mean business and that you’re willing to invest more than a year’s worth of time and cash for a domain registration.

When you certify your website, you’re literally telling the World Wide Web that your domain is YOUR little spot in the web. It’s pretty cool because it’s like hanging a sign on your virtual home that says “Welcome to <insert your name here>’s Crib”.

Step 3: Privacy and Domain protection

Doesn’t hurt to be a little too safe now, right? In this day and age where hackers are about, it’s always a good idea to put in a little extra fence with a few hungry blood-thirsty guard dogs inside. Oh and don’t get me started with the privacy issues!

Make sure you consider purchasing additional services that allow you to protect your domain privacy and guards against domain theft. Of course, you don’t NEED to purchase this outright but if you think you should, then by all means, go right ahead.

Step 4: Consider upsells

You may want to take note of GoDaddy’s email service, web hosting, shopping cart and SEO features. They’re really nifty if you want to start straight out. This, like any other upsell, doesn’t need to be acted upon immediately.

Step 5: Check everything out

After a gruelling process (NOT!) of registering your domain name, make that purchase and check your emails for anything necessary. Make sure you keep it with you at all times. An extra copy saved in your computer folders might help.

That’s about it for registering your domain name, folks. Give yourself a pat in the back because you’ve taken your first step to Internet marketing success – don’t worry if you’ve made a few mistakes along the way. You’ll get to do it like a pro soon.

So open a new tab, go to http://www.godaddy.com/ and grab your little piece of Internet heaven now!
