Don’t know what search engine optimization is? Know someone who needs easy to understand overview of SEO? That’s what this video provides, in just three minutes. It’s part of the many resources provided by Search Engine Land’s “What Is SEO” page searching…
Search engines such as Google and Bing are like Librarians of the Internet. Search engines have a system of giving the right answers as they sift through all the information available online. This is why we get a list of relevant search results when we type words and phrases on the search box. It’s like a library with a system that knows how books relate to each other, scans through them their content, and spit out the best answers.
How do search engines do this? The answer lies on the algorithm or their secret recipe. The algorithm is responsible for turning all the information into search results. But algorithms are always refined and changes all the time. But one thing is for sure, the higher your site’s ranking is, the better chances people can find you.
In order for you to have higher rankings, your site must have the right ingredients search engines need for their secret recipe. Implementing these ingredients is called Search Engine Optimization or SEO.
The ingredients are:
1. Words Matter – search engines account for every word in the web. This helps them narrow down the search.
2. Titles Matter – this is like a book’s title. It summarizes what your page is about. Every page has a title, this helps search engines find them quicker.
3. Links Between Websites – these links are like recommendations. When other websites, link to your site, it means you have valuable information. This can help in your site’s ranking. But there are those who buy bogus links just to have lots of other sites linking to them. Usually search engines can detect these.
4.Words in Link – this is when you make a link out of a specific word. For example, you link the word carwash, to a site that specializes in taking care of cars and give tips on how you can keep cars clean. This helps search engines see sites like this and attribute them in the appropriate searches.
5. Reputation – your reputation online matters most. This means you consistently post fresh and valuable content in your site. A site with a good reputation has a better chance at ranking high in search engines.
These are just some of the essential ingredients for good SEO. But definitely, you need good content for good SEO.
