People love to buy stuff, whether they really need it or they just fancy it. But they don’t like being sold to. They don’t appreciate a hard-sell approach.
Essentially, we are all consumers, but we don’t want to be treated like customers. We want to be approached as human beings with feelings. We want to be respected and to be asked rather than to be told to. Seth Godin said, “…one way to sell a consumer something in the future is simply to get his or her permission in advance.”
Asking consumers’ permission will help build better relationships with them. Going the extra mile of treating consumers as more than just another sale is a good habit. They will appreciate the gesture more.
Before you even think of selling something, know who your consumer is. Let them know you are there to help and ask permission in advance before you even offer something. Connect with them and you will successfully have a better relationship with them.
